The Sigma Alpha Omega Sorority® was founded by seven women as a sister sorority to Chi Alpha Omega. Chi Alpha Omega was originally a co-ed Christian Fraternity founded in the spring of 1987 at North Carolina State University. In hopes to benefit the fraternity, the active brothers (both males and females) voted to form Sigma Alpha Omega® in January of 1998. Though different organizations, both the fraternity and sorority work to living according to the ideals of Christ and His Word, fellowship and service to uplift each other, and bringing the love of Christ to the campus.

In the spring of 2004, the Alpha chapter's active and alumni sisters met to discuss the future of the sorority, and by the end of the summer, Sigma Alpha Omega® became Sigma Alpha Omega® Christian Sorority, Inc. Since then, the sorority has become recognized as a national non-profit organization along with a National Board of Trustees to help connect the chapters of the growing sorority.
